Meet Our Team: Mitch Girard

Sweet, sophisticated, and … boozy?  No, he is not a beer. He is one of our long time brewers, Mitch Girard!

 

What do you do at Redwood Curtain Brewing Company?

Everything but bartend, and I have worked here for  8 years.

What did you do before you worked at RCBC?

I was going to school at Humboldt State University for Environmental Science, and during that time I did a lot of homebrewing.  I realized I enjoyed brewing so much, I applied for a job as a brewer at RCBC and got it within two weeks after graduation.

Tell us about your journey at RCBC.  How did you land a job with this company?

I was working at Humbrews bartending and they were carrying the IGA on tap.  I tried it and loved it. So I came to RCBC’s tasting room and tried the other beers available and loved those also.  After that, with resume in hand, I was harassing Drake all the time to give me a job brewing. And here I am.


What is your favorite RCBC beer?

The Dubbel, because I am a big fan of Belgians, it’s sophisticated, and it’s boozy.

If you were an RCBC beer, which one would you be?

The Dubbel because I am sophisticated, boozy, and sweet.  :)

What beers on the RCBC menu have you created or collaborated on?

My babies were the Strange Daze American Strong Ale, the Liquid Swords Barley Wine, the Jeanne-Marie Belgian Single, and the Breakfast Daddy Milk Stout.  Mo’ Mitch was a collaboration, but Drake and I will usually collaborate by meeting up and discussing what ingredients we have currently and what beer we can make with those ingredients.

What do you enjoy most about working at RCBC?

With this place being so small, it gives me the opportunity to experiment with different styles of beer, so I really love that.  Also all the awesome people that work here are great.

You guys in production listen to a lot of music!  What is your favorite music to listen to?

I start the day out mellow, usually with some reggae; then I get a little more intense moving into hip-hop, and then end the brew day with some heavy techno.  There is also a little bit of Frank Sinatra in the mix throughout the shift.

What RCBC apparel do you wear the most?

I wear my custom fleece jacket the most, but I have worn out some RCBC t-shirts too while brewing.

What is your favorite beer that is not RCBC?

Heady Topper Double IPA from The Alchemist Brewery in Vermont.

What do you do when you are not brewing beer?

I play a lot of soccer, disc golf, and ski as much as possible when I can get to the mountains.  My favorite place that I have been skiing is Jackson Hole in Wyoming.

What is the most memorable place you have visited?  What was so memorable about it?

Switzerland!  It was the end of a two month backpacking trip in Europe before going to college, and I was blown away by the mountains I saw and the amazing hiking I was able to do in that area.

What is something that most people do not know about you?

I am left footed, but right handed; I play ping-pong with my left hand.

What isn’t real that you desperately wish it was?

Unicorns.

You are getting ready to move!  :( Where do you hope to land? Why?

I am hoping to end up in Bend, Oregon.  There is a vast amount of great breweries in the area and there are a lot of options for outdoor activities.

What have you learned from working at RCBC that you will take with you to your next job?

The ability to wear multiple hats.  I have done everything from bartending to brewing to delivering our beer, and I think that is very valuable to be able to have knowledge in different parts of the brewing industry   And then all the different styles of beer I have been able to brew while working for RCBC has been very beneficial as well.
